Leslie Day can be described as many things - mother, hard worker, determined, active, animal lover - but complacent among her list of adjectives. Over the years, Leslie’s orthopedic troubles have come often, affecting everything from her shoulders to her knees, but never has she allowed those conditions to slow her down or keep her from the things she loved. As far as Leslie is concerned, life is for living, and she needed an orthopedic team on her side that agreed.
It was Leslie’s podiatrist who first referred her to
The Bone and Joint Clinic about 15 years ago when her knees began to bother her. After a career spent climbing towers at Exxon, her joints had taken quite a toll, and her doctor felt she could benefit from the expertise of
Dr. David Pope. At fifty-five years old, she underwent her first of many orthopedic procedures when Dr. Pope scoped her knee. Eventually, that knee had to be replaced, but her
joint replacement surgeries were just beginning.
Leslie’s active lifestyle and physically demanding career ultimately led to the replacement of both shoulders with
Dr. Mathew Mazoch and both hips with
Dr. Joseph Broyles. While it certainly wasn’t the path she had hoped her retirement years would take, she’s immensely grateful to have found the doctors who not only possess the skill to keep her moving but the compassion to ensure her treatments align with her lifestyle.
“These doctors really listen to you,” explains Leslie. “They don’t just tell you to quit doing stuff like swimming or working out. They work with you, so you can keep living your life.”
In the years, following her surgeries, Leslie’s life has settled into a nice routine that still focuses on all the things that make her happiest. While she can no longer run, she continues to walk and exercise, and she spends her days working at an animal shelter alongside her daughter. She hopes that her major orthopedic surgeries are behind her, but she continues to maintain her relationships at The Bone and Joint Clinic. Dr. Pope is currently treating her for a ligament in her other knee, and she has seen
Dr. M. Tyson Garon for problems with her wrist and thumb.
In the end, Leslie’s goal is to keep moving and living her life to the fullest, and as long as she has the skilled physicians of The Bone and Joint Clinic by her side, she knows she can make that happen.
“I never would’ve been able to maintain my quality of life without these doctors,” says Leslie. “I am thoroughly happy. Without them, I would have been just sitting in a chair!”
