Total Hip Replacement: Kathryn Moran’s Patient Story

As an Orthopedic Nurse with 45 years of experience, my knowledge about total hip surgeries was extensive. In 2016, during the aftermath of a flood, I sustained a hip injury that eventually necessitated a replacement. However, despite my expertise, I didn't consider surgery until five years later. Having served as a nurse manager at OLOL for years, I actively contributed to the formation of the Total Joint program. Witnessing how joint surgeries had significantly improved patients' quality of life over time, I understood the potential benefits.

I initially embarked on a journey of physical therapy to enhance my mobility. Yet, as I found myself unable to fully partake in the joys of attending my grandkids' ball games, engaging in recreational activities, enjoying vacations, and simply spending quality time, I realized the time had come to make a decision.

Opting for the Superpath hip replacement approach, I entrusted my care to Dr. Jeb Broyles, a skilled orthopedic surgeon at the Bone and Joint. It's worth noting that my surgery took place during the challenging period of the Covid pandemic, prior to the availability of vaccines. Throughout the process, I was profoundly impressed by the professionalism and dedication of the office staff, nurses, nurse practitioners, X-ray technicians, and schedulers. The plan was in place—all that was required of me was to give my consent to the surgery.

My hospital experience was nothing short of exceptional. The staff demonstrated unwavering care and compassion. While I was in the preoperative phase, Dr. Broyles took the time to share a prayer with both me and my family. This moment of connection and spirituality put my mind at ease, and I felt fully prepared for the upcoming procedure. The surgery was an unequivocal success, and as I began my recovery, I embarked on a journey of physical therapy, walking with the assistance of a walker on the very day of the surgery. Due to the ongoing Covid situation, I consulted with Dr. Broyles to arrange for my therapy at home, utilizing the exercises and instructional materials provided by the physical therapy team. Remarkably, I only needed a single extra-strength Tylenol for incisional discomfort.

Upon my return to the doctor's office for a post-operative evaluation, I was able to perform deep knee bends, touching the floor, and I could walk without the need for a cane. Embracing an active lifestyle once more, I am delighted to report that I remain free from joint pain.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the benevolent forces that guided me throughout this journey. The support of all those who contributed to my successful outcome, including the medical team and the power of faith, is deeply cherished. I am committed to being an advocate for joint replacement surgery and for the exceptional care provided by the Bone and Joint Clinic facility.
