The Signs and Symptoms of a Torn Meniscus

Early detection of the symptoms of a torn meniscus will assist in ensuring appropriate treatment and recovery. This common knee injury is frequently brought on by abrupt twisting or impact. Damage to the meniscus, which serves as a cushion between the thigh and shin bones, can cause severe pain and impair movement.

Pain in the Knee Caused by a Meniscus Tear

The first obvious sign of a torn meniscus is frequently pain. Depending on whatever area of the meniscus is torn, the pain may be concentrated on the inner or outer side of the knee. Activities like squatting, climbing stairs, and rotating might make the pain worse.

Knee Swelling and Stiffness from Your Meniscus

Usually, swelling appears after tearing the meniscus within the first twenty-four hours following the injury. You may find it difficult to fully bend or straighten your leg because of a tight, tough-to-move knee.

Clicking or Locking Sensations in the Knee Due to a Torn Meniscus

The knee may "catch" or "lock" when moving due to a torn meniscus. This is because loose cartilage fragments interfere with the joint's ability to function, making daily chores difficult.

Knee Instability from a Meniscus Injury

Some people feel as though their knees are giving way or becoming unsteady. This raises the possibility of more injuries and might make it difficult to walk or bear weight on the injured limb.

Difficulty Straightening the Leg Because of a Meniscus Tear

It may become difficult to fully extend the knee due to a mechanical block in the joint caused by the tear. A visible limp or changed gait may result from this.

Seeking Medical Attention for a Knee Injury

Seeking advice from a healthcare professional is crucial if you suspect a torn meniscus. A physical examination, imaging studies, and occasionally an arthroscopy are necessary for an appropriate diagnosis. Complications like persistent pain or arthritis can be avoided with early diagnosis and treatment, which may involve physical therapy, rest, or surgery.
