The Importance of Foot Care for Diabetic Patients

Diabetes is a condition that impacts the body‘s ability to produce or effectively use insulin, resulting in an inability to properly regulate blood sugar. However, it also comes with many possible complications, including heart disease, chronic kidney disease, vision problems, and nerve damage.

Diabetic Foot Concerns

In cases where nerve damage does occur, it largely impacts the lower extremities, including the feet. This is a condition known as neuropathy. The symptoms may include a burning or stinging sensation, tingling, or weakness in the feet. Gradually, loss of feeling in the feet due to neuropathy makes it easier for injuries to occur and go unnoticed. Poor circulation in the feet of diabetic patients also commonly leads to problems such as slow healing and an increased probability of infection.

In addition, as many as 15 percent of patients with diabetes will suffer from at least one foot ulcer. Due to the aforementioned complications, these ulcers can quickly become a dangerous problem. In fact, anywhere from 14 to 24 percent of patients who develop a diabetic foot ulcer will ultimately require an amputation. Outside of trauma-related cases, diabetes is the leading cause of lower extremity amputations.

Fortunately, vigilant care of the feet can prevent many of these cases. It is highly encouraged that anyone with diabetes takes exceptional care of their feet, examining them regularly for any signs of trauma and having any issues quickly evaluated by a podiatrist.

Preventing Foot Problems in Diabetic Patients

Diabetic patients have many options to help ensure the health of their feet. These include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying the feet every day, including between the toes
  • Moisturizing feet daily
  • Keeping toenails neatly trimmed
  • Checking feet regularly for any cuts, sores, or blisters
  • Wearing properly fitting shoes and moisture-wicking socks
  • Avoiding walking barefoot

Such safety measures will help ensure that feet remain healthy and without injury. However, should any concerns be noted or injuries occur, it is important to seek the medical attention of a podiatrist. The earlier any problems are addressed by a qualified medical professional, the lower the likelihood that future complications will occur.
